What can an irrigation
leak look like?
One symptom can have several causes. Proper troubleshooting matters because visible water, low pressure, and a high bill do not identify the failed component by themselves.
A wet or soggy area
One part of the yard stays wet, puddles, bubbles, or erodes without a clear explanation from rain or normal watering.
A zone loses pressure
Sprinkler heads rise weakly, fail to pop up, or produce noticeably less flow while that zone is operating.
A valve box fills with water
The box remains wet or refills after water is removed. The source may be a valve, manifold, fitting, or nearby line and should be confirmed.
A sudden water-bill increase
Water use rises without an obvious household reason. Irrigation is one possible source, but the system must be tested before assuming it caused the increase.
Visible broken components
A cracked pipe, fitting, pop-up connection, drip line, valve, manifold, or irrigation gun releases water when the system is pressurized or the zone runs.

Stop the water
when you safely can.
If the property has a clearly identified irrigation shutoff, turn off that separate irrigation supply. A controller in the “off” position may stop scheduled zones, but it may not stop a leak on a continuously pressurized supply line.
Do not operate unfamiliar valves or begin digging around utilities. If the irrigation system has no separate shutoff, the property may require its main water supply to be turned off until the repair can be completed. Installing or modifying a separate copper supply line requires a plumber.

We specialize in residential troubleshooting, repair, and ongoing care; we do not install complete new irrigation systems. If a repair requires new copper plumbing or changes to the property’s domestic water supply, we recommend a plumber for that work.

Start with the symptom
We ask whether the water is constant or appears only during a watering cycle, where it is visible, and whether pressure or the water bill has changed.
Run individual zones
Each relevant zone is operated separately while we watch for puddling, unusual flow, weak pressure, or sprinkler heads that fail to rise normally.
Inspect valves and manifolds
If no surface leak appears while the zones run, accessible valve boxes, valves, connections, and manifolds are checked for leakage or operating concerns.
Narrow the repair area
Digging begins only after the observations point to a likely area. A wet spot alone does not prove the exact failed part or the exact underground location.
Repair the confirmed problem
The damaged pipe, fitting, valve, manifold, head connection, drip component, or other approved irrigation component is repaired or replaced.
Allow proper cure time
Some pressurized PVC repairs need additional time before water can safely be restored. The return and testing schedule depends on the materials and repair conditions.
Restore water and retest
The repaired area and affected zones are tested after the repair is ready to be pressurized. Older or brittle systems can reveal another weak point after a major break is corrected.

What should I do if irrigation water is actively leaking?+
If you can safely identify a separate irrigation shutoff, turn off the irrigation water supply and leave it off. Turning off only the controller may not stop a leak on a continuously pressurized supply line. If you cannot identify the correct valve, call or text for guidance rather than operating unfamiliar plumbing.
What if the irrigation system does not have a separate shutoff?+
Some older properties do not have an independent irrigation shutoff. Stopping a continuously pressurized irrigation leak may then require the property’s main water to be shut off. A plumber—not Distinct Irrigation—would be the appropriate professional to install or modify a separate copper water-supply line.
Can you find an underground sprinkler leak?+
We troubleshoot underground irrigation leaks by comparing symptoms, operating zones individually, observing pressure and surface water, and inspecting accessible valves and manifolds. We do not claim specialized electronic leak-detection equipment.
Does a high water bill prove the sprinkler system is leaking?+
No. Irrigation is one possible source of increased water use, but the system should be inspected and tested before deciding that it caused the bill increase.
Will the repaired line be tested immediately?+
It depends on the repair. The affected area is retested after the pipe, fittings, and cement are ready to be pressurized. For some pressurized PVC repairs, Distinct Irrigation may return later—often the next day—to restore water and retest the system.
Do you install complete new irrigation systems?+
No. We specialize in troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining existing residential irrigation systems rather than installing complete new systems.
